Ted Green was made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) for his services to the Crown Estate at a ceremony at Windsor Castle in February.
After an initial career at Imperial College, Ted was appointed by the Nature Conservancy Council (a predecessor of Natural England) in the 1980s to act as liaison between the council and the Crown Estate at Windsor. He was tasked with building an understanding of trees and their ecology, including the importance of dead wood – a job he describes as ‘An absolute gift.’ More than 30 years on, he still uses every available opportunity to champion trees, especially those at Windsor, including the conversation he had with King Charles as the king presented him with his MVO in the Grand Reception Room at Windsor Castle.
