Boel Hammarstrand
(Climbing Arborist)
“Climbing a tree has nothing to do with your gender; it’s purely to do with your skills, your knowledge and your passion.
“If you just put your mind to it, regardless if you’re a man or a woman, anybody can do anything. You just have to believe in yourself and work together with each other in the industry”

Becki Gawthorpe
(Biosecurity Outreach Officer)
“I’ve gone from climbing, to surveying, to consultancy and I’m now working for the Forestry Commission in their Tree Health Team which is something I never imagined that I could do with the qualifications I achieved in arboriculture.”

Michelle Ryan
(Senior Arboriculture & Landscape Specialist)
Michelle Ryan AA trustee talks about women in arboriculture and the Women In Arboriculture working group in the lead up to International Women's Day 2020.
“If women that are wanting to come into the industry see themselves or see people like them, then they’ll be more inclined to join…There's variety, you don't have to be a tree climber, but if you want to, do it!”

Women in Arboriculture Kit Survey
One of the key objectives for the Women in Arboriculture group is supporting the women in our industry, and we have often been told that getting PPE and climbing kit that fits is a real issue. This can range from sizing, design or even a complete absence of the kit they need.
We would appreciate your comments on the kit you use, positive and negative. This will give us a footing to start approaching kit manufacturer/suppliers showing them that there’s a real need for improvement on what’s currently on offer.

The Arborist
2 March 2020
On the 2nd March we attended the screening of ‘The Arborist’. This is a short film directed by the BAFTA winner Clare Sturges, the story is based around an arborist and her struggle as she realises her twin’s memorial tree is dying. We provided them with initial technical advice and Jo Hedger was the Special Advisor throughout the production. The film will be on the BBC in the Summer.
