About the role…

Do you have current or previous experience as a Tree Officer and working with members of the public?

Cheltenham Borough Council have an exciting new opportunity within our Planning service for an Assistant Tree Officer

As an Assistant Tree Officer, you will administer and manage the tree function within the Planning Department (TPO’s and Conservation Areas), Planning consultations, High Hedges, and assist with the management of CBC tree stock.

Other parts of your role will include managing tree work applications, notifications and planning appeals.

To be successful you will need…

  • 2 years’ experience in a related role in local government or similar
  • To be educated to QCF Level 4 in Arboriculture
  • A Lantra Award for Professional Trees Inspection (Level 2)
  • Knowledge of trees within the Cheltenham Area would be desirable

Job description and employee specification

Supervises: No supervisory responsibility.

Purpose: To administer and manage the tree function within the Planning Department (TPO’s and Conservation Areas), Planning consultations, High Hedges, and assist with the management of CBC tree stock.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Respond to formal tree work applications, notifications, planning appeals etc.
  • Respond to consultations from planning officers
  • Review and update the TPO portfolio
  • Prepare a tree strategy with reference to trees and planning
  • Assist Senior Trees Officer in management of council owned tree stock
  • Respond to High Hedge complaints
  • Liaise and communicate with members of public, fellow officers, stakeholders, politicians, statutory and non-statutory organisations etc.

Essential requirements - qualifications, skills, abilities and experience:

Qualifications:

  • Educated to QCF Level 4 in Arboriculture
  • Lantra Award for Professional Trees Inspection (Level 2)
  • Full clean drivers licence

Experience:

  • 2 years’ experience in a related role in local government or similar

Skills and abilities:

  • Good level of IT skills, e.g. use of MS Office
  • Communicates effectively at all levels (excellent listening, verbal and written skills)
  • Achieves results through others
  • Is customer focussed, responsive, and co-operative with customers
  • Is proactive/self-motivated
  • Prioritises and meets tight deadlines
  • Flexible approach to working patterns and hours
  • Works together with employees, colleagues and customers to resolve problems and implement change initiatives
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with current data protection legislation

Desirable requirements - qualifications, skills, abilities and experience:

  • Experience of tree surgery/work ordering
  • Knowledge of trees within the Cheltenham Area

Special conditions:

  • There may be a requirement to work at other locations to meet the needs of the business.
  • Expected to work reasonable additional hours in line with the needs of the service.
  • You will need use of a car for work purposes.
