The Jersey Trees For Life requires the utilisation of arborist skills and experience to help enable it to achieve their goals and fulfil its purpose of being a source of expertise in trees, woodlands and tree planting.

Purpose of Job:

To assist in providing an Arboricultural service for areas of land owned, administered or maintained by Jersey Trees For Life.

Arboriculture is the cultivation and maintenance of trees and shrubs in the landscape The arborist will work on land administered by JTFL, private garden areas, Government of Jersey sites, conservation areas and farm hedgerows.

A proportion of work undertaken in these areas is on a contractual basis to private landowners, tree planting and tree management.

Main Duties:

  • Assist in the provision of a full Arborist service using a range of specialist plant, machinery and equipment. Work includes, tree surgery using chainsaws at heights, tree felling and tree planting
  • Drive JTFL vehicles pickups and medium goods lorry
  • Work with school groups and volunteer groups in undertaking projects
  • Undertake, implement and review Risk Assessments for work carried out by team members and make recommendations where Health and Safety can be improved
  • Be part of a team with staff, volunteer workers in order to achieve objectives
  • Where necessary, liaise with relevant authorities to ensure successful and appropriate execution of the associations aims and projects
  • Fill out a weekly time sheet
  • Undertake other duties appropriate with the position as directed by the Chairman or appointee
  • Deal with the public in response to questions/concerns about, for example, a tree being felled communication skills
  • They are required to demonstrate equipment and assist in the training of inexperienced operators in the safe and correct use of the specialised equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • When using pesticide spraying equipment for weed control purposes the post holder is required by regulation to keep written records of the details and quantity of chemical used

Health and safety:

  • To be responsible for your own health and safety and that of your colleagues, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work (Jersey) Law, 1989
  • To work in accordance with the Data Protection (Jersey) Law
  • Ensure work is completed to recognised industry standards and adheres to current health and safety legislation.
  • Carry out daily vehicle and machinery inspection prior to starting the day as per manufactures recommendations.
  • Ensure that all statutory training, equipment and health and safety requirements and standards are met by all staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain safe and clean workplace environment.
  • Maintain staff and activity records including accident book, near-miss book, pesticides book, tools and equipment inventory, health and safety records, procedures and training.


  • A good up to date understanding of the Health and Safety at Work (Jersey) Law 1989 and its application to the workplace is required
  • An excellent working knowledge together with formal training in the safe use and maintenance of a wide range of, machinery and equipment Proper use of mechanical tools including:
  • Strimmer, chainsaw, woodchipper, rotary and reciprocating mower, hedge trimmer, soil auger, compressor, pole saws etc.

Nursery production:

  • Produce plants from seeds and cuttings. Maintain nursery plants and structures.

Tree planting:

  • Ranging from cuttings and seedlings to extra heavy standard and semi-mature.


  • To include grass and rough vegetation, weed control, watering, formative pruning, hedge cutting.
  • Spraying Certificates PA1 and PA6 - 3 days
  • A clean and current driving licence

Chainsaw use:

  • Cross cutting, felling, de-limbing, pruning.

Tree surgery (climbing):

  • Must be in possession of the appropriate City and Guilds NPTC Level 2 and Level 3 awards in arboriculture or equivalent Lantra certification.
  • NPTC Units should include:
    • Chainsaw maintenance – Level 2
    • Tree climbing and aerial rescue – Level 2
    • Felling trees up to 380mm – Level 2
    • Basic Risk Assessment – Level 2
    • Aerial cutting of trees with chainsaw – Level 3
    • Felling trees over 380mm – Level 3
    • Individual and multiple windblown trees – Level 3

Tree surgery (groundsman):

  • Work in conjunction with the climber to ensure safety of other site users as well as other staff.
  • Prevent damage to surrounding objects.
  • Direct traffic and pedestrians etc. as necessary, set up cones and signs.
  • To be able to perform and conduct aerial rescue.

Tree felling:

  • Use of hand winch, wedges, felling tools and pulling rope.
  • Stack wood and treat stumps to prevent regrowth
